Air China makes maiden flight to Ethiopia’s capital
Air China makes maiden flight to Ethiopia’s capital
ADDIS ABABA — Air China, one of China’s biggest airlines, on Monday made its maiden flight to Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, which has become the second destination of the airline in Africa, next to South Africa.
With its launching flight, Air China touched down at the Bole International Airport in the capital of the East African country, which is a seat for headquarters of the African Union (AU) and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) among other international and regional organizations.
With this new route, Air China will make thrice a week flights between Beijing and Addis Ababa.
The launching flight of the Airline with Airbus A330 was accorded warm welcome during its landing at Bole Airport by officials and staff members of the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise, the Ethiopian Airlines, Air China and also diplomats among others.
The new route of Air China between Beijing and Addis Ababa came few days after the launch of maiden flight between Beijing and Johannesburg in South Africa few days back.
Tewolde Gebremariam, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ethiopian Airlines Group, told Xinhua on the occasion that the launch of flights between Beijing and Addis Ababa by Air China would be both cooperation and “friendly” competition between Ethiopian and Air China.
Reiterating that both Air China and Ethiopian are members of the Star Alliance, the CEO said the two airliners would cooperate in the spirit of Star Alliance as Air China flies to 225 domestic destinations in China while Ethiopian does to 50 destinations in Africa.
“It is going to be both cooperation and competition; we call it a friendly competition. So, we are very happy that Air China has chosen Addis as its hub in Africa,” said Tewolde.
“Naturally, Addis is the best gateway to Africa with the Ethiopian Airlines flying to more than 50 destinations in Africa. So, Air China is the Star Alliance member and the Ethiopian Airlines is also a member of Star Alliance, so, within the spirit of Star Alliance we are going to cooperate,” he said.
“Air China flies to 225 destinations in China domestically; and Ethiopian Airlines (flies to) more than 50 destinations in Africa. So, we have a lot of synergy, complementarity; so, we are going to cooperate in that line. But, at the same time we are going to compete. So, it is competition and cooperation,” he added.
Liu Tiexiang, Senior Vice President of Air China, said at the reception held at Sheraton Hotel that this operation of the flight is a very convenient air bridge between China and Africa.
With the increase of exchanges between the two countries and with the increase of investment by Chinese companies in Africa, more and more Chinese people are coming to Africa, he said.

Forget sunny Spain, enchanting Thailand and the romance of France: Ethiopia is named ‘World’s Best Tourism Destination’
Ethiopia has nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, which were heralded by the commission.
Tourism was defined as a tool for poverty eradication, for local community development and for economic independence is a successful strategy.
Ethiopia’s goal is to boost tourist revenues to $3 billion this year – in 2013 revenues from tourism were at $2 billion.
And, if it achieves that, it will start challenging the dominance of regional rivals on Africa’s eastern seaboard, such as Kenya and Tanzania.
But instead of beach holidays and safaris, land-locked Ethiopia is promoting its imperial past – the below ground 13th century churches of Lalibela, hewn from solid rock, and the hill castles of Gondar – as well as its mountainous and majestic topography.
Visitor numbers have risen 12 percent a year in the past decade to reach 600,000 in 2014. The target at the end of this year is one million.
In the capital of Addis Ababa, the transformation from the starvation years and the ‘Red Terror’ purges of the 1970s and 1980s is plain to see. Construction is booming and a metro opens next year, cutting through the sprawling city — the only such network in sub-Saharan Africa.
The commission praised the the excellent preservation of humanity landmarks such as: ruins of the city of Aksum- the heart of ancient Ethiopia, Fasil Ghebbi- the residence of the Ethiopian emperors during the 16th and 17th century, Harar Jugol- 82 mosques, 102 shrines, and unique interior design in the townhouses and Lalibela – holy site encompassing 11 medieval stone carved churches from the 13th century.

Ethiopia has been voted the world’s best tourism destination for 2015
Ethiopia has been chosen as this year’s top destination in the world for tourists by the European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT), a non-profit group of European Union tourism trade organizations.
Africa’s second-most populated country was chosen for its “excellent preservation of humanity landmarks” such as the ruins of the city of Aksum, known as the heart of ancient Ethiopia, and Fasil Ghebbi, which served as the residence of the Ethiopian emperors during the 16th and 17th century.
It is also home to Harar Jugol—considered the fourth holiest Islamic city with 82 mosques, 102 shrines, and unique interior design in the townhouses—and Lalibela, a holy site encompassing 11 medieval stone carved churches from the 13th century.

Other sites include the Konso Cultural Landscape (containing 55 kilometers of stonewalled terraces and fortified settlements) and Lower Valley of the Awash, where the fossil remains of Lucy were discovered.
All these sites are registered as UNESCO World heritage monuments.
In addition to heritage sites, Ethiopia is recognized for its natural parks and reservations, including the Simien National Park.
The Ethiopian embassy celebrated the award with a tweet including some of the country’s popular tourist spots.
